COME & TRY

We welcome anyone to come and try paddling in our dragon boat throughout the year. We also have specific ‘Come & Try’ events at various times during the year. We post details of this on our Facebook page.

Contact us on 0450 082 919 to let us know you are coming down, or message us through our social media, or simply come on down!

Here are a few pointers to help you to enjoy a fun and exciting team experience.

Be sun safe – Remember SLIP on a shirt, SLOP on sun-cream, SLAP on a hat, SLIDE on your sunnies and bring a bottle of water, the type with a pop-up top works well.

What to wear- Shorts and a T-shirt or a rashie. You can wear thongs, Crocs, reef walker type shoes or even runners.

Bring a Change of Clothes – As dragon boating is a water sport, you may get wet. You may find that a towel and change of clothes will be handy.

Paddling equipment is all you need – Water damage can ruin valuable items if you choose to wear or take them in the boat, we can secure car keys in a safe location.

Paddlers must be able to swim 50m confidently or wear a personal floatation device (PFD). You must tell your paddling partner and Sweep of your ‘comfort level’ if you are in the water.

Fitness & Technique take time to develop so take a breather from time to time as you build your skill and ability.

Teamwear & Paddles.

Once you sign up teamwear is available to purchase. Further information on teamwear options and prices can be provided once you become a member. All members will be expected to purchase a race top as a minimum to train and race in. We have training paddles that you are welcome to use to begin with, however down the track most paddlers choose to purchase their own paddle.

 Communication.

As a team the predominant way we keep in touch is via a private Whatsapp group. Once you become a member, we will add you to the group. We also send some key information via email, and you will be added to the 'crew' mailing list.

Racing & Events.

The main dragon boat season runs from October to April each year, with May-September classed as off season. Throughout the main season we race in monthly regattas held at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, which culminate in the state championships in March. There is a race day fee to compete to cover the costs of racing.

The National Dragon Boat Championships are held each year in April.

During the off season we compete in numerous racing events which in the past has included the Avon Descent, Classic Paddle (Bridge to Bridge) & Claisebrook (catch the flag) Challenge. We also compete in out-of-town events such as the Denmark Marathon and Forza Twilight Regatta in Bunbury.

As well as all the racing events, we hold regular social events for crew members, ranging from family orientated day events to evening social gatherings with a beverage or two! We also celebrate the achievements of each season with an end of year wind up which is held annually around April/May.
